Even kids know that we should wait for the traffic light to turn green before crossing a road, but not everybody follows this basic rule.

“Chinese style road crossing” has become a hot expression recently. Chinese people “cross roads without thinking about traffic lights, so long as they are part of a crowd”, said a post on Sina Weibo.

A CCTV news program showed that in only an hour, more than 600 people jumped red lights when crossing a road at a crossing in Shijiazhuang, Hebei.

Many people say that they jaywalk because the red light lasts too long. Such an opinion is supported by a research team at Tongji University. The team did research on people’s waiting times at different road crossings from 2008 to 2010. They found that Chinese people would wait for 70 to 90 seconds before they lost their patience. “People are likely to ignore(忽视) the light when the waiting time is longer than they can stand,” said Ni Ying, a member of the research team.

However, a survey on Sina Weibo suggested that half of the respondents(调查对象)believe that people jaywalk mainly because they disregard rules. “I always obey traffic rules. Time is important but safety should come first,” wrote “Qixiaoe” on Weibo.

Many countries give out punishments to jaywalkers. In Singapore, the maximum can be three months in prison. Some Chinese cities have started taking some actions, too. For example, the first three people in a jaywalking group will be fined 50 yuan in Shijiazhuang.

But calling on people to respect rules is more important. To completely solve the problem, everyone should realize the importance of obeying the traffic rules.

21. Which of the following is the “Chinese style road crossing”?

A. To wait for the traffic light to turn green.

   B. To cross a road slowly.

C. To cross roads without looking at traffic lights.

D. To follow the basic traffic lights.

22. What does the phrase “the team” in Paragraph 4 refer to (指的是)?

A. A CCTV news program.             B. A research group at Tongji University.

C. A post on Sina Weibo.                     D. A daily newspaper.

23. How long will Chinese people wait to cross the road before they lose patience?

    A. Less than one minute.                      B. About five minutes.

    C. Less than one and a half minutes.      D. More than ten minutes.

24. Why do people jaywalk according to the survey on Sina Weibo?

A. Because there are too many people on the road.

B. Because the red light lasts too long.

C. Because people don’t pay much attention to rules.

D. Because people have less patience.

25. The writer suggests that we should________ to solve the problem of jaywalking.

A. punish the jaywalkers            B. disregard the traffic rules

C. reduce the time of red lights    D. call on people to obey the traffic lights

C

Every morning, the newspaper chief editor holds a meeting with the reporters. They discuss the main events of the day. Reporters are then sent to cover the events.

As soon as the reporters know what to write about, they get down to work. They telephone people and fix a time for a face-to-face interview with them. Sometimes they do telephone interviews. Checking information is very important. They go to the newspaper’s own library to look up any information that they need. This is called “doing one’s homework”.

At the same time, the picture editor decides which photographs will be used for the next day’s paper. All the people who work on a newspaper must be able to work fast. Reporters have to stop working on one story and start working at once on the important new one. They must find out the new information as quickly as possible. Later in the day, everything is put together at the news desk. Reporters return, type their stories into the computer and hand them to the editor.

The chief editor decides which will be the most important story on the front page. Sometimes this will have to be changed if something more important happens late in the day. Word editors read the stories which the reporters have written and make any necessary changes.[来源:学科网]

Finally, there is no more time left for adding new stories, and the time for printing the newspaper has come. This is done on fast-moving printing machines. The newspapers are then delivered(发送) by truck, plane or rail. Speed is important. People want to buy the latest newspaper; nobody wants to buy yesterday’s.

26. What is the work in a newspaper office like?

    A. Interesting and confusing             B. Important and patient.

   C. Particular and necessary.             D. Fast and busy.

27. According to the passage, the last step of a reporter’s work is ____________.

    A. writing stories                            B. doing interviews

    C. doing homework                         D. handing stories to the editor

28. The front page contents(内容) are decided by ___________.

   A. the importance of the events          B. how well the stories are written

   C. the knowledge of the chief editor    D. whether they are the latest

29. Word editors’ work is to ____________.

    A. help the chief editor with the morning discussion

    B. decide when and how the papers can be printed

    C. read the stories and make necessary changes

    D. get together information from reporters and photographers

30. The best title for this passage is “____________”.

    A. How a newspaper is born                 B. How newspapers are delivered

 C. What kind of papers readers like      D. Whose work is more important

书面表达

We did a survey of how many hours the students in our school sleep every day. Here are the results.

Most students sleep than seven hours a day. Why? First, students have too much homework to do. Second, a number of students like playing with mobile phones before sleeping. That causes less sleeping time. Third, some students are too stressed out to sleep well because of too much pressure from teachers and parents.

How to solve the problems? Less homework should be given to students. And students are supposed to stay away from digital products before going to bed. More importantly, parents and teachers should care for students more and put less pressure on them.

第一节

M: Mom, I’d like to get a part-time job like my brother Sam.

W: I don’t think you should be allowed to do that, Jim. You aren’t old enough.

W: Are you allowed to play computer games at home at the weekend?

M: yes, but I can play computer games for only an hour.

M: I think Jack should stop wearing that silly t-shirt. What do you think, Lisa?

W: I disagree, Tony. In fact, Jack should be allowed to do what he likes to do.

M: The shirt feels comfortable. What’s it made of?

W: It’s made of silk. And it was made in China.

W: Look, there’s a Chinese book on the floor. Who do you think it belongs to?

M: It must be Jimmy’s because he always leaves things here and there.

W: Let me have a look. There’s a name on it. But it’s not Jimmy---it’s Tina, oh, I remember she looked for it just now. It must be hers.

     第二节

M: The summer vacation is coming. Where are you going, Cindy?

W: Well, my parents and I are going to Jiuzhaigou.

M: Why do you want to go there?

W: Because my friend Paul often says that it’s an interesting place. But it’s too far away from here. So we’ll get there by train.

M: That sounds good. Could you please take me there, too?

W: Why not, Bill? It will be more fun.

M: Thanks a lot. By the way, when and where are we going to meet?

W: How about next Monday at the train station?

     M: OK. See you then.

W: What are you doing, Michael?

M: I’m watching a wonderful English film Wall.E.

W: What’s it about?

M: It’s about robots.

W: I’m very interested in them. Would you tell me more about them?

M: Sure. Robots have a long history. The first one was made by an American inventor.

W: What can robots do?

M: They do housework for people in many films. In our real life, most robots are used in factories. They are used to do dangerous, difficult or boring jobs.

W: What will robots be like in the future?

M: They will do more work in space. And it’s possible that a robot brain will appear by 2019.
